Show 6. AFTER ITS FOUNDING IT QUICKLY ESTABLISHED ITSELF AS THE LEADING BUILDER OF RAILROADS IN THE FAR WEST, IT PROSPERED FROM THE OUTSET AND IN 1919 EARNED $1,600,000. THIS WAS A RECORD NOT SERIOUSLY CHALLENGED FOR THE NEXT 26 YEARS. BY 1920 THE RAILROADS WERE LARGELY BUILT AND THE COMPANY WAS FORCED TO TURN ITS EFFORTS TO OTHER PURSUITS. WHILE IT RARELY LOST MONEY, ITS FINANCIAL RESULTS WERE SOMETHING LESS THAN SPECTACULAR FROM 1919 UNTIL 1946 OR EVEN LATER. DURING THESE YEARS IT EARNED ABOUT A HALF MILLION DOLLARS YEARLY DOGGEDLY PURSUING HEAVY ENGINEERING CONSTRUCTION AS ITS MAIN ACTIVITY, REACTING TO, RATHER THAN ANTICIPATING, THE CHANGING TIMES. RARE IS THE CONSTRUCTION COMPANY THAT SURVIVES ITS FOUNDERS BUT SOMEHOW UTAH SURVIVED THE DEATH OF ITS THREE PRINCIPAL OFFICERS WITHIN TWO YEARS, A FAILURE TO PLAN ADEQUATELY FOR MANAGEMENT SUCCESSION, A RIFT AMONG THE PRINCIPAL SHAREHOLDERS THAT LEFT TOP MANAGEMENT TIMID, UNADVEN- |
