Show WORLD TRADE CLUB INTERNATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD MAY 13, 1986 Thank you Frank. Good evening, members of the World Trade Club of San Francisco, Ladies and Gentlemen. You have honored me by bestowing on me your International Achievement Award for 1986. I am most appreciative. I am particularly grateful for this recognition because it comes at a time that could well be described as the twilight of my career. A month ago I went off the last Board of Directors of the eight publicly held company's boards on which I have served. Last week I attended my 50th Class Reunion at Stanford. Next month I travel to Australia for a dinner in my honor given by the directors of Broken Hill Proprietary Ltd. in commemoration of my retirement from the Board of Utah International, on which I have served for the past 35 years. In such circumstances it is nice to be remembered. I have been present at these dinners when the award was conferred on others. I join distinguished company and most of the past recipients were good friends of mine and people that I held in very high esteem. But until I was singled out as the target I never had any real conception of how the process works. For you who are new members of the Club this is a secret I would like to share with you, for it has some of the trappings of a clandestine organization. I was first contacted by a very good friend early in the year who put to me the question as to whether I would accept the International Achievement Award if it were conferred upon me. This caught me by surprise. I pointed out that I had retired as Utah's Chief Executive Officer in 1978, could not have claimed any credit for any contribution to international trade in recent years, and that the statute of limitations must have run as far as I was concerned. I suggested this might have been a case of mistaken identity. From my standpoint he was too easily convinced that this could be the case because he immediately said he would check back to verify that he had the right person. This took a while but in a couple of agonizing days he was back and assured me that the accomplishments were not measured on a calendar year basis but took into account a longer span of time. With this rationalization I eagerly indicated my willingness to accept and shortly thereafter I had a very nice letter from President Canonica officially advising me that I had been selected for this occasion. I replied that I would be delighted to accept and would show up at the appointed time. 1. |
