Show Only five of us invited here tonight can be held accountable for the Fuller folly. Herman Phleger was weary from years in Washington straightening out John Foster Dulles. Dave Packard claims his lips were sealed by the fraternal vows of Alph Delta Phi. Wally Sterling was historian and the idea of starting a dynasty appealed to him. Arbuckle was going through one of his frequest repotting periods and was on furlough as a Dean. Fuller's election came up for vote at the first meeting that Dick Guggenhime attended as a trustee. With uncharacteristic reticence, Dick failed to speak up, an error he has never again repeated on this or any other subject. Only I am left to explain - as best one can - why we acted as we did. W. P. Ill was represented to us as "a chip off the old block" and indeed, he was. We bought the argument without pausing to realize that by definition "a chip" is much less than the whole. We relied too heavily on both heredity and environment to make up the difference. This is the kind of error one makes when the President of the university is an historian instead of a human biologist. What the situation demanded was advanced genetic engineering. Certainly W. P. Ill came from great stock. His father's accomplishments were vast. He had helped Herbert Hoover feed the Belgians and he himself had fed a very large family of Fullers, who were leading the good life without conspicuous effort on their part. His mother was remarkable - bright, durable, and soloed at age 65. Heredity may be fine for race horses but we learned to our sorrow that you can't pick potential trustees out of a "stud book". The line had simply reached its peak. |
