Show FURMANFILMS :10 Tying cable bundles (B) :08 Compressing cable jacks :30 Support cable brackets in cable and wrapping cable the bridge. When it was all spun, it was compressed by six huge screw jacks, squeezing it to the perscribed diameter of 28 3/4 inches. from the elements. These are the cable bands of cast steel over which the steel ropes will be looped. These ropes hold the bridge to the suspension cable. Then the entire cable was wrapped with wire to protect it :18 Hanging steel deck structure 1:12 Attaching deck structure (PAUSE 4 SECONDS) Everything was going well, even better than expected. In fact the bridge was going to be finished months ahead of schedual...and $7 million below estimate. Despite the fact that so many things had never been done before, no serious delays had been encountered. Many records were being set. Actual construction of what was then the largest bridge complex in the world had taken only 3 years and four months to complete. Hundreds of painters covered the whole bridge in only a few months, and set a record by covering over 1000 liners feet in only a week. 35 |
