Show FURMANFILMS SECTION II BUILDING THE SUSPENSION SPANS Length: 5:09 :23 Hoisting big steel section up tower (B) The suspension span towers were built one at a time. They took 50 foot pre-assembled sections from barges and hoisted them by giant hammerhead cranes into position, then bolted them together. The equipment was massive, but so were the towers. (PAUSE 3 SECONDS) Each tower would rise over 512 feet above the bay, in just three weeks. They were designed to take incredible loads, yet be able to bend at the top 4 or 5 feet with changes in temperature and load. When the tower was finished, then the bolts were removed and replaced by 100,000 white hot rivits. These were men of steel... eager to work.
