Distinguishing between the restructurings that provide social benefits and those that do not has been the dilemma for public policy. Like the dinosaurs, activities that do not serve the public interest are ultimately doomed. The first solution may not be the best solution. But a solution will be found that will slow the raiding process down, that will let the market make better judgments without the panic that now prevails, and that will advance the public interest. This will make the hostile takeover game less rewarding and therefore less fun to play. Change is the only constant in the world of business. Anticipating change and adjusting to it is the essence of management. Those that fail to change will not survive. Only the fittest will grow and prosper in today's world where information flows instantaneously everywhere and where there is no place to hide from the factors that influence economies worldwide. The quality of management has always made the difference. But today good management is an imperative. It is the ultimate weapon that dooms the raider to defeat. So my final warning to those of you that would storm the walls of corporate Camelot. Make haste! The window is closing. Your days may be numbered.
