Bank board rooms used to be stuffed with bodies up to the maximum of the 25 directors that regulations allowed. Add the bodies of management and staff and the hot air that was the by-product of the discussions and you had a stifling atmosphere that was unlikely to produce effective discussion or wise decisions on the matters that should be and need to be the proper province of boards of directors. Carl has soundly in my opinion let the board shrink to a size that facilitates discussion and the conduct of the board's business. But soon it will be timely to bring onto the board new directors. It is my final and strong admonition to you to insist that these new members of the board be of the highest quality - men or women of diverse experience, well developed analytical skills, proven wisdom, sensitive in dealing with people, capable of communicating and willing to speak their minds, and absolutely intolerant of mediocre performance at. the management levels. If you do this task well, Wells Fargo is bound to continue to be - as it is today - at the very forefront of America's financial institutions.
