Bohemian GroveLakeside Talk July 30, 1988 THANK YOU, LEN FELLOW BOHEMIANS AND GUESTS When Len Richardson invited me to address this distinguished audience on this particular day, I was honored but anguished. I realized that the Lakeside on the final Saturday of the Midsummer Encampment had been traditionally given by Herbert Hoover. After The Chief died, the spot was given to those Bohemians who had played prominent roles on the national and international scene. So humbly I sought the answer to the question - "Why me?" The answer seemed to be that this is an election year and, given its other problems, a year in which the Bohemian Club wanted to maintain a low profile. In these circumstance mine was a name that came immediately to mind. I had hardly accepted the assignment before Len was pressing me for the title of the speech I had yet to write. His justification was that the lead time was required by the artist that would draw the posters and by the necessity to include it in the printed program of Grove activities that would be mailed to all members and guests. Having committed myself to a title, I later found last year's program. I quote from the billing for the final Saturday Lakeside last year: "Topic - To be announced Speaker - To be announced"
