The Lakeside Talk Committee is carefully comparing attendance this year with that of last year to see which billing will prove to be the greater draw. This is not my first time as a Lakeside speaker. My title on the first Sabbath of the Midsummer Encampment in 1983 was "Enjoying the Corporate Climbe" and my mission was to counsel those in attendance on how to take maximum advantage of being a corporate chief executive officer. While the speech was off the record, word got around. The record shows that since that time the compensation of chief executives has risen faster than just about any other economic indicator - about twice as fast as the compensation of other employees whether they be middle management, white collar, blue collar, no collar or nylon, twice as fast as profits or inflation. I don't claim all the credit but the Lakeside Talk Committee was impressed and felt a second session on career counseling would be timely. Today my subject is "Still Enjoying the Corporate Climb Clime?" and it is punctuated by a question mark. The title is intended to throw up a warning flag to those who are contemplating devoting their time and talents to climbing the corporate ladder. It is not as much fun as it used to be. Even at the top the compensation can't compete with the big names in athletics or entertainment. So if you are gifted with the kind of hand-eye coordination required to pass a football, hit a baseball, play a musical instrument, sing while you gyrate your pelvis, or if you're heavily muscled and seven feet tall, go out for the team or play in the band.
