Show whispered something to him. Then the lion skidded to a halt and slowly trotted away. After the hungriest and fiercest of all the lions had refused to eat, a frustrated Nero ordered the Christian unchained and brought before him. Nero said, "If you tell me what you said to the lions, I will set you free." To which the Christian replied, "It's a deal. All I said was, 'After dinner there will be speeches.'" That is not the case here tonight. Here we have a capacity crowd and have had to turn people away because all of us are eager to hear from our distinguished honored guest. But this evening we have adopted the ancient Chinese custom, for the Chinese learned long ago that things worth hearing were best heard and best remembered if they were said before dinner. Then even the speaker could enjoy his meal. The Ernest C. Arbuckle Award is presented to an individual who "by his or her actions and achievements has demonstrated notable excellence as a professional administrator committed to principle, and with continuing concern for, and sensitivity to the changing needs of society." These were qualities exemplified by Ernie and certainly standards more than met by the man we honor here tonight. Ernie would have been delighted with our selection. I do not propose to dwell overly long on what George P. Shultz has done that is a matter of public record. It is hard to conceive what he has achieved in his lifetime. It is well known that he played football and earned his bachelor's at Princeton, 2. |
