served three years in World War II in the U. S. Marine Corps, and earned his PhD from MIT where he also taught economics. Subsequently he became a professor of industrial relations and later Dean of the Chicago Graduate School of Business, which he elevated to the front ranks of such schools across the nation. He has performed important scholarly research and written scholarly works that are highly respected. He became a part-time faculty professor at Stanford's Graduate School of Business in 1974. His credentials as a scholar and a leading academician are impeccable. George has also demonstrated that he was a very skillful businessman. Here he didn't exactly start at the bottom. He joined the Bechtel Corporation in 1974 as executive vice president and director. He really was on a "fast track." He performed so admirably that he was made president the next year. In 1981 he was named president of the Bechtel Group, Inc., and so served until he was called upon by the President to serve as Secretary of State. From close personal observation and first-hand knowledge I can testify that George was a superb business executive. Perhaps his government service has provided his greatest visibility. Being Secretary to State is the fourth cabinet post that George has held. He is the only person in U. S. history to hold three different cabinet posts under the same presidential administration.
