TODAY, IT REMAINS AN IMPRESSIVE STRUCTURE WORTHY OF THAT TITLE. IT IS A LANDMARK THAT DOMINATES NOT ONLY THE LANDSCAPE, BUT THE SKYLINE OF SAN FRANCISCO. IT REMAINS THE LONGEST HIGH- LEVEL BRIDGE IN THE WORLD. IT IS ALSO ONE OF THE BUSIEST. THE BRIDGE IS THE CENTERPIECE OF THE BAY AREA'S TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM. ON PEAK DAYS, THE BRIDGE CARRIES MORE THAN 250,000 CARS, TRUCKS, AND BUSES TO AND FROM SAN FRANCISCO. IT HAS TRANSFORMED THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA. THE VERY DECISION TO BUILD THE BRIDGE WAS MADE BY MEN OF VISION AND COURAGE. THEY DARED TO DO WHAT HAD NEVER BEEN DONE. THE WESTERN SECTION FEATURED THE LARGEST PIER IN THE WORLD, CONSUMING MORE CONCRETE THAN THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING. 3.
