The Weber County Chapter of the Red Cross began in December 1915 when a small group of individuals gathered to begin organizing a chapter of the Red Cross. In 1962, the name was changed to the Bonneville chapter, and in 1969, the chapter merged with other chapters in Northern Utah to become the Northern Utah Chapter, with its headquarters located in Ogden, Utah. The scrapbooks range from 1940 to 2003 and highlight some of the important work of the Red Cross. The books include photographs, newspaper clippings, and other materials. |

Show CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS Office of the First Presidency SALT LAKE CITY 1, UTAH January 16, 1950 To BISHOPS OF WARDS Dear Brethren: A letter just received from Howard Bonham, Vice President for Public Relations of the American National Red Cross, informs us that during the month of March the organization will make its annual appeal to the American people for funds. We quote the following information and report submitted by the American National Red Cross as to the accomplishments of their organization during the past year: “Assisted approximately 228,500 persons in 330 domestic disaster operations, the greatest number of disasters ever attended by the organization in a single year. “Given counsel and assistance, in personal and family problems in nearly 3,000,000 cases of servicemen, veterans, and their dependents and made available $8,837,000 in financial assistance. “Provided Red Cross social workers to help thousands of hospitalized serviceman in restoring sick minds and bodies and has provided recreation and entertainment for hospitalized servicemen and veterans. “Presented more than 67,500 Veterans’ Claims to Veterans Administration Rating Boards. “Provided 400,000 pints of blood, given by volunteer donors, to many of the sick and injured in the 550 chapters now participating in the National Blood Program. “Trained over 1,000,000 persons, both adult and juniors in first aid, water safety and accident prevention. Trained 126,894 persons in home care of the sick through Home Nursing Instruction. “Assigned an estimated 220,000 trained members of Volunteer Services who gave almost 12,000,000 hours of community service—not only through Red Cross programs, but also as participates in the work of many non-Red Cross agencies and institutions. “Encouraged over 19,000,000 children in Junior Red Cross to serve others through their Red Cross chapters. We again urge the members of the Church to contribute liberally in response to this appeal for funds to carry on their great missions of mercy. We should like you to read this notice in your sacrament meeting on Sunday, March 5, 1950, or if that be a conference day, then on the Sunday following. Faithfully yours, Geo. Albert Smith J.
