The Weber County Chapter of the Red Cross began in December 1915 when a small group of individuals gathered to begin organizing a chapter of the Red Cross. In 1962, the name was changed to the Bonneville chapter, and in 1969, the chapter merged with other chapters in Northern Utah to become the Northern Utah Chapter, with its headquarters located in Ogden, Utah. The scrapbooks range from 1940 to 2003 and highlight some of the important work of the Red Cross. The books include photographs, newspaper clippings, and other materials. |

Show AMERICAN RED CR0S1 SERVICES RENDERED 1950 DISASTER SERVICE Are you cognizant of the fact that your Red Cross Chapter stands ready to assist should disaster occur Since last summer our local chapter has given over $450.00 to victims of fires for clothing and bedding —While the National Red Cross has ex¬pended mere than $12,000,000 in more than, 300 disasters, The train wrecks in the East being the worst. Your disaster committee is now in the process of completing its organization and will be ready to assist civil defense should occasion arise. Committees are being organ¬ized throughout rural districts s:o that if necessary, people could be evacuated to these outlying areas where hospitals, shelters, and canteens could be set up. "Be Prepared" is its motto. A Roster of all nurses in Weber County has been brought up to date with addresses and telephone numbers made available to Red Cross Headquarters. HOLE SERVICE Do you know what it means to have a husband called into the service leaving behind him a family with no means of support - Or to be late in receiving allotment checks and no money to pay for groceries or rent - Or to have a loved one suddenly stricken ill and funds will not stretch to take care of emergency. All of the above emergencies have come to the attention of your local chapter this past year, and assistance has been given to servicemens' families depending upon need. Servicemen have been granted emergency furlough after chapters have verified with doctors, the illness or death of a loved one at home. Counsel and guidance in personal problems have been given to veterans and service on and their families. Also veterans have been helped to apply for benefits due them. 3816 persons were given assistance last year. $16,653.49 expended in rendering the above services. Duet© increase in military personnel financial assistance has been confined to servicemen and their families and. disabled veterans pending adjudication of their claims. SAFETY SERVICES Red Cross nationally is given the responsibility of training 20,000,000 people in First Aid in the United States. The plan to train one person out of every four in Weber County — A big job* This course is free to individuals, but Red Cross must furnish supplies and instructors. 21 instructors 936 First Aid certificates issued last year 15 instructors 701 Water Safety certificates issued last year Polio and spastic youngsters of Weber County were transported to Brigham City Indian School, and were taught how to swim by our instructors. These children had to be given individual attention. HOME NURSING The knowledge of Home Nursing gives one a feeling of security when illness strikes in the Home. The Red Cross has been given the responsibility of training housewives and others in Home Nursing for the Civil Defense program. |
