Show THE WHITE HOUSE WAS HIN G TO N January 16, 1952 TO THE HEADS OF EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENTS, COMMISSIONS OR AGENCIES: The American Red Cross has a record of accomplishment of which you and I may well be proud. As plans are made for the March 19^2 Fund Campaign, we are aware that at no other time, except in a world-wide war, are there greater or more compelling needs to be met. With all our people we share the opportunity to carry out these re¬sponsibilities of the Red Cross. Our large National Hed Cross budget reflects disaster emergencies at home and emergencies due to our greater military strength both at home and abroad. Items of major importance include the national blood bank program, field serv¬ices to the armed forces, work with veterans and their families, the Junior Red Cross, the Safety Services, and disaster relief. The government workers have a splendid record in their monetary contributions to the Red Cross and also in giving to the blood bank. They are among the finest and most patriotic citizens we have anywhere. They are proud of their country, proud of their city, and respond generously in the name of good citizenship to such an undertaking as the Red Cross. In order to help sustain for the coming year increasing ac¬tivities of the Red Cross in the chapters of the Metropolitan Area as well as their national and international obligations, I have desig¬nated the Honorable William McChesney Martin, Jr., Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, as Chairman of the Government Unit for the 1952 campaign. I request that you cooperate with him by giving such leadership as is necessary to promote an ef¬fective organization adequate to giving your entire personnel oppor¬tunity to contribute and attain the goal desired from your department. You, also, will please extend to your several field offices a request to cooperate in the fund campaigns of their respective local Red Cross chapters. I am confident that your performance will again be a credit to our capital city, a memorial to our gallant youth overseas, and a renewed indication of the generosity and good will of our people.
