The American Red Cross, in addition to its other vital activities, is playing a vital part in the development of civil defense. Since June, 1950, the Red Cross has --doubled the number of trained first aid instructors; --doubled the number of nurse instructors in the home nursing program; --multiplied by ten the number of non-nurse instructors; --issued over a million certificates to persons who have received first aid training. These are only a few of the ways in which the Red Cross is cooperating with civil defense to get America ready for possible enemy attack. We hope and pray that that attack will never come. But if it does come, the millions of civil defense volunteers trained in first aid will save tens of thousands of lives that might otherwise be lost. America needs civil defense, and civil defense needs the Red Cross.
