Show JUNIOR RED CROSS vitamins, and powdered milk for starving young¬sters of India; clothing for Turkish refugees. When they were able, the children of other countries sent gifts back to this country. When they weren't able, they wrote thank-you letters. And what's the specific purpose of all this? It is to establish among the youth of all countries— the grown-ups of tomorrow—a feeling of sym¬pathy and understanding based on knowledge of the other fellow, how he lives, what his prob¬lems are. In this way, the Red Cross feels, can be built the structure of world understanding and real peace. The Junior Red Cross school correspondence program within the United States, now in its 22nd year, is similar to the international pro¬gram. Its purpose is to override barriers of geog¬raphy or artificial prejudice among the young people of our own country. It now operates in nearly every state and in most United States territories. Junior Red Cross members also have their 20 JUNIOR RED CROSS regular jobs to perform in assisting adult pro¬grams in the organization. They serve as enter¬tainers in veterans hospitals, as messengers and clerical workers in disasters, and as participants in first aid and home nursing courses. They also produce recreational and comfort articles by the million for community and service institutions. Success of this vast program is due largely to the enthusiastic efforts of almost 90,000 teacher- sponsors who direct the program in enrolled schools. They constitute one of the largest volun¬teer groups in the Red Cross. COLLEGE ACTIVITIES STUDENTS from more than 1,000 colleges brought the verve and bounce of youth into Red Cross chapter programs last year. Much of their work was in civilian, military, and veterans hospitals, primarily as members of the Entertainment and Instruction Service. This meant staging parties and games, and instructing patients in diverting hobbies such as handicrafts. As volunteer drivers, college students helped transport crippled children to and from hospitals and doctors' offices, took hospitalized veterans to picnics and parties, and transported blood and blood donors. On many campuses student Red Cross groups recruited blood donors from among their fellow students and arranged for visits of mobile blood collecting units. Students also took part in the civil defense program by taking courses in first aid and home 21 |
