Social welfare aides worked in Red Cross chapter Home Service departments, in federal and civilian hospitals, in Red Cross field direc¬tors' offices, and in community agencies outside the Red Cross, assisting trained social workers in their duties. Production and Supply Service volunteers made 20,119,100 surgical dressings, 200,000 kit bags for troops in Korea and in military hospitals in Japan, and provided 35,000 gift-wrapped pack¬ages—each containing six gifts—for servicemen who spent Christmas Day on ships at sea. Arts and Skills workers taught painting, sketch¬ing, silk screening, ceramics, and other handi¬crafts to thousands in hospitals, in children's homes, and in homes for the aged.
