IN OGDEN American Red Cross Volunteer In Tune With National Emergen By SALLY HUMPHRIS OGDEN — Volunteers have answered the call. Faded blue canteen uniforms, long since in use, are once again being worn, until new replacements can be ordered. Once again American Red Cross workers are coming back in uniform. What jolted Ogdenites out of doldrums? A national blood donation program did the trick. The Red Cross blood program, with headquarters in Boise, es¬tablished a branch in Ogden with Mrs. Leah Greenwell as director. Mrs. Greenwell asked Mrs. R. B. Porter of the Canteen and Mrs. Harmon B. Barton of the Gray Ladies to assist once again. They replied with a re¬sounding "yes-" Nurses' aids and staff assistants were asked for their help, and before long Ogden women were once again answering the call to duty. Plans were made, and former workers were assigned duties. BLOOD DONORS The Gray Ladies met the blood donors at the Utah Gen¬eral Depot. Next a staff assist¬ant took down the needed in¬formation. Then a nurses' aid entered the picture and took the donor's temperature. A Canteen worker gave them fruit juice, then one by one the blood donors were sent into the hospital partitions. AFTER DONATION After a pint of blood was taken, the donors were again greeted by the Gray Ladies and Canteen workers. A glass of milk and a cookie and a bit of relaxation betfore they hur¬ried back to their work. The three-day blood program at the Utah General Depot was the largest one ever attempted in Ogden. Approximately 250 workers gave blood each day. Mrs. Leah Greenwell of the Ogden Red Cross chapter now has a group ^of, women who want to be doing things. Once in uniform, they want to stay that way. Soon other activities will be found, the Ogder. unteers are very niuch i ' once again. NURSES AID—Mrs. Clayton Robb performs one of the many Grey Lady services as she assists Miss Dorothea Da-vis, R. N., in taking blood donation. Red Cross' volunteers have been awakened by the call for increase blood dona¬tions in connection with the National Emergency. |
