Show COLLEGE ACTIVITIES nursing and by promoting campus interest in these subjects. Apart from the very real help they gave in local situations, students received practical lessons in community responsibility which will prepare them for Red Cross leadership in their home communities. FOREIGN OPERATIONS ONE OF THE MOST down-to-earth jobs of relieving present world tension is being done in the name of simple humanitarianism by the foreign operations section of the American Red Cross. The job leads behind Russia's iron curtain, onto the battlefields of Korea, into refugee shel¬ters in Germany, to a tuberculosis clinic in Iran, to a flood area of Pakistan. Aid ranges from helping reunite war-separated families to providing medicines for earthquake victims. That the program pays off in precious good will abroad is evidenced by the scores of thank-you letters received. One of the most solid, yet most unusual, forms of aid goes by the stiff-sounding title of Foreign Location Inquiry Service. This service locates and brings together families and friends who have been separated by war or international strife. Replies to inquiries were received last year from Hungary, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, and Russia, among other countries. As a further step toward understanding and friendship among nations, the Red Cross financed 22 FOREIGN OPERATIONS study visits to this country for 27 representatives of 15 foreign Red Cross societies. On the material side, aid to Korea heads the list. A total of $400,000 has been provided for Korean civilian relief by the American Red Cross and from the National Children's Fund of the Junior Red Cross. Much of this has gone for the purchase of technical supplies on Cheju-Do, an is¬land haven for some 80,000 Korean war refugees. In South Korea itself, the Korean Red Cross has been able to bring medical aid to thousands of refugees with the supplies and guidance fur¬nished by the American Red Cross and Red Cross societies of other nations. Constituent so¬cieties of the League of Red Cross Societies have contributed collectively more than $1 million for Korean civilian relief. The American Red Cross and four other societies have each sent three-man medical welfare teams to Korea. 23 |
