Show 16. IT WAS NO SECRET IN 1953 THAT U.S. STEEL WAS PLANNING TO BUILD AN INTEGRATED STEEL FACILITY AT PITTSBURG, CALIFORNIA. WE IN UTAH IMMEDIATELY SET OUT TO POSITION OURSELVES TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS SITUATION BY LOCATING RESERVES OF IRON ORE AND COKING COAL TO SUPPLY PART OF THEIR REQUIREMENTS. WE QUICKLY ACQUIRED THE DAYTON IRON ORE DEPOSIT NEAR CARSON CITY, NEVADA, BUT THE COKING COAL PROVED HARDER TO COME BY. WE LOOKED TO NO AVAIL IN THE WESTERN UNITED STATES, MEXICO, AND SOUTH AMERICA, WE HAD OPTIONS ON SOME OF THE CANADIAN DEPOSITS SINCE DEVELOPED BUT THE KEY TO THEIR DEVELOPMENT WAS COOPERATION BY THE CANADIAN RAILWAYS AND THIS WAS NOT FORTHCOMING. BY THIS TIME WE WERE CONVINCED COKING COAL WAS BOTH HARD TO FIND AND WORTH FINDING. So WE PERSEVERED AND FINALLY IN AUSTRALIA YEARS LATER WE FOUND IT IN ABUNDANCE. WE HAVE BECOME THE WORLD'S MAJOR SUPPLIER OF COKING COAL BUT TODAY THE DAYTON IRON ORE DEPOSIT LIES FALLOW AND THE IDEA THAT STARTED IT ALL IS STILL |
