Show out pay. He is still available for this type of assignment but as a Director his services now are only in demand by corporations seeking to be taken over. With heredity failing us, we could only fall back on environment but, alas, here too we came a cropper. As I was, you must have been impressed by the appearance of the youthful Parmer in the picture of the brothers of Alpha Delta Phi that served as the cover for the invitation to dinner here this evening. Now look if you will, at our honored guest 50 odd years later. One can only conclude that "we are what we eat." The slender silhouette held up for a while but his figure started to settle when Parmer endured four years of military service. In his own words and in a rare moment of introspection he admitted that about this time "the TURN silver spoon in his mouth began to to lead in his tail." Parmer went on active duty December 7, 1941 as an ensign in Naval Intelligence. Among his shipmates were Guggenhime, Arbuckle, and yours truly. All of us - even Parmer - found that we were overqualified for the tasks at hand but Parmer faced the greatest challenge. In the Navy the promotion path from ensign to lieutenant commander is strictly on a seniority basis and one was safe as long as he didn't do something not in the manual or make some smart wisecrack that could offend a senior officer. This was not easy for Parmer because his immediate superiors consisted of longtime reserve officers whose civilian careers had reached their zenith. One had sold stamps in the Santa Cruz Post Office and the other lamps for General Electric, a profession Mr. Kimball and I view more kindly now than I did then.
