She looked at him in complete disgust and said: "My God, any idiot with a high school education knows how to work a Xerox Machine." Bill has always been an ingenious problem solver. During the height of the Vietnam War and the mindless actions taken against people in high places Bill was serving as a Trustee of Stanford University when one of the terrorist groups in the middle of the night threw a crudely made fire bomb at his home in Palo Alto. The bomb did no substantial damage but it obviously attracted the immediate attention of the police and of the media. Knowing he would be beseiged with reporters from the press, radio and TV, Bill wanted to buy time until he could get in touch with his public relations director and get his counsel and advice. As the phone rang repeatedly, Hewlett answered but faked being a recorded message center. He simply said: "This is Bill Hewlett talking. I am sorry I cannot come to the phone right now but if you will leave your name and telephone number I will get back to you as soon as I can." Bill remembers old friends and is not afraid to express his gratitude. What started H-P in the garage was Bill's patented invention of the resistance capacity audio oscillator, which may not do much for you or me, but it did a great deal for H-P and for Walt Disney Studios. Bill personally negotiated the first sale to one Mr. Cook, Disney's Chief Engineer, and the product was used in the production of "Fantasia," the film classic that moved Disney from Mickey Mouse one-reelers to movie big time.
