Show THE NUMBERS TEND TO SUPPORT THIS STATEMENT. IN THE PAST DECADE AT COMPOUND ANNUAL RATES TOTAL ASSETS GREW 21 1/2%, NET INCOME 23%, NET INCOME PER SHARE OVER 14%. THE STOCK PRICE SOARED FROM $3.64 TO $23.41, ALMOST TWICE BOOK VALUE WITH MANY BANK STOCKS NOW SELLING UNDER BOOK. ALONG THE WAY HE ACQUIRED SOME 22 BANKS BUT PROFITS -- NOT SIZE -- WAS ALWAYS THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE. HIS OPERATING RATIOS ARE ENVIED BY HIS COMPETITORS. BEFORE SHE WAS THAT WELL-KNOWN JOHN EVEN HIRED PHYLLIS DILLER TO DO SOME COMMERCIALS FOR THE SANK AND PROMPTLY RECEIVED COMPLAINTS FROM SOME OF HIS DIRECTORS THAT THIS WAS NOT FITTING. THE MCCOY MANAGEMENT STYLE EMERGED. HE CHECKED WITH HIS OFFICER IN CHARGE WHO CONVINCED HIM THE COMMERCIALS WERE GETTING THE JOB DONE. JOHN SAID TO THE OFFICER: "I'LL BACK YOU UP BUT YOU BETTER BE RIGHT!" HE SAID TO THE DIRECTOR: WHAT DO YOU PREFER DIGNITY OR DIVIDENDS?" BUT THE REAL MCCOY COMES THROUGH IN THE NEW FIELDS HE PLOWED, IN HOW HE SHOWED THE WAY. BANC ONE OFFERED THE FIRST AUTOMATIC TELLER MACHINE TO ITS CUSTOMERS. LED THE WAY IN SYSTEMS AND AUTOMATION, PROVIDED BANKING BACKBONE TO MERRILL LYNCH'S CASH MANAGEMENT ACCOUNT, FORESAW THE FUTURE OF CREDIT CARDS AND PERSUADED BANK OF AMERICA TO GO NATIONAL WITH ITS CREDIT CARD. IT IS TRULY AN IMPRESSIVE RECORD. 13. |
