MORE TIME ELAPSED BETWEEN THE DATE HE EARNED HIS MBA AND THE TIME HE RECEIVED THE AWARD THAN WITH EARLIER RECIPIENTS. I CAN OFFER NO JUSTIFICATION, ONLY THREE EXPLANATIONS. FIRST, WE WERE WAITING FOR HIM TO BECOME CHAIRMAN OF BANC ONE BUT HE NEVER MADE IT. HE WAS SIMPLY CONTENT TO BE THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER FOR 28 YEARS. HE IS THE ONLY MAN I KNOW THAT CONFERRED ON HIMSELF THE TITLE VICE CHAIRMAN AND CHAIRMAN OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE ON THE WAY UP. THE REST OF US GOT THESE TITLES ON THE WAY DOWN OR OUT. SECOND, WE GOT WORRIED ABOUT HIS SPELLING WHEN THE TOP COMPANY WAS NAMED B - A - N - C, NOT REALIZING THAT THE STATE OF OHIO FORBIDS BANK WITH A "K" IN A HOLDING COMPANY NAME. THIRD, IF YOU EXPECT WELL-DESERVED NATIONAL RECOGNITION, DON'T HIDE YOUR LAMP UNDER A BUSHEL IN COLUMBUS, OHIO. FIRMS EVEN MOVE THEIR HEADQUARTERS FROM COLUMBUS TO CINCINNATI! 14. |
