Show CONGRESS HAD INTENDED TO RESTRICT WHAT BANKS COULD DO BY PASSING THE BANK HOLDING COMPANY ACT OF 1956 BUT THE LANGUAGE OF THE STATUTE ASSUMED THAT A HOLDING COMPANY WOULD HOLD TWO OR MORE BANKS. WALT SAW AN OPEN DOOR AND SO HE CREATED A ONE-BANK HOLDING COMPANY AND USED IT TO OFFER A BROAD RANGE OF FINANCIAL SERVICES PREVIOUSLY FORBIDDEN AND TO EXPAND INTO GEOGRAPHICAL AREAS HERETOFORE OFF LIMITS. SO IT CAME TO PASS THAT CITICORP HAS A SAVINGS AND LOAN IN CALIFORNIA, BANKS IN DELAWARE, MAINE, AND SOUTH DAKOTA, OWNS DINERS CLUB AND CARTE BLANCHE, AND HAS OFFICES IN 40 STATES AND 92 COUNTRIES. WALT SURROUNDED HIMSELF WITH STRONG PEOPLE WITH WHOM HE WAS QUICK TO SHARE THE CREDIT. AS HE HIMSELF PUT IT: "IF YOU WANT THE HOTTEST TICKETS TO COME WITH YOU, YOU HAVE TO OFFER THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXERCISE THEIR TALENTS . . . "I KNOW NO RULE THAT REQUIRES ONE TO PACE HIMSELF TO THE LEVEL OF THE SLOWEST GUY IN THE ROOM." 4. |
