FRIENDS This is not the first time that I have been asked to speak about Arjay Miller. I have done so before. New material on Arjay is hard to come by but I proceed on the hopeful assumption that the younger people here are too young to have heard it the first time and the older people are too old to remember it. I first met Arjay in 1969 at a small dinner party at Wally Sterling's when we were rushing him for the job as Dean of the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Wally Sterling looked like a man without mischief but behind that big cuddly St. Bernard look was a Machiavellian approach that left little to chance. The stage was carefully set. On working conditions Ernie Arbuckle was there saying the job was fun and a cinch to do. A prospective dean is going to be concerned about fundraising. Bill Hewlett was there with instructions to look generous. Arjay was certain to have some interest in his own cash flow. I was there to indicate to Arjay the whereabouts of a source of supplemental income since I already had Arbuckle on the Utah International Board and had agreed that I'd go for a matched pair.
