Show THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON January 4, 1950 TO THE HEADS OF EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENTS, COMMISSIONS OR AGENCIES: As we approach the period of its 1950 campaign, the accomplishments of the American Red Cross command our continuing and generous cooperation in the many chapters throughout the nation. During the past year thousands were assisted in domestic disaster relief operations. Financial and other assistance was given to more than two million servicemen, veterans and their dependents. Thousands of hospitalized servicemen had the help of the Red Cross in restoring sick minds and bodies. The Red Cross National Blood Program provided for civilians an indispensable service to prevent needless suffering and loss of life. Over one and a quarter million persons were trained in the safety services and home nursing. Nineteen million young people in the Junior Red Cross served others through their chapters in preparation to join the great company of volunteers trained in community service. All of these services claim our admiration and hearty support. I am pleased, therefore, to request you as the head of your department to provide the leadership and organization required in the forthcoming 1950 Red Cross campaign for the efficient solicitation of your departmental personnel whether here or in the field. To assure such leadership within the Metropolitan Area of Washington, I have appointed again the Honorable Charles F. Brannan, the Secretary of Agriculture, as Chairman of the Government Unit. I bespeak for him the same generous response accorded in his previous and most successful campaign. Harry Truman |
