The Weber County Chapter of the Red Cross began in December 1915 when a small group of individuals gathered to begin organizing a chapter of the Red Cross. In 1962, the name was changed to the Bonneville chapter, and in 1969, the chapter merged with other chapters in Northern Utah to become the Northern Utah Chapter, with its headquarters located in Ogden, Utah. The scrapbooks range from 1940 to 2003 and highlight some of the important work of the Red Cross. The books include photographs, newspaper clippings, and other materials. |

Show Gallatin High School Bozeman Montana Nov. 13, 1951 Bear Junior Red Cross Friend, I am writing this letter to tell you some of the history of Montana and our community of Bozeman in order that you may "become better acquainted with us. The part of Montana lying east of the divide became part of the United States with the purchase of Louisiana from France in 1803. The part of Montana west of the divide belonged to the Oregon County which was claimed by United States and Britain. Lewis and Clark entered Montana in 1306 and are be¬lieved to be the first men to enter Montana. In 1307 Manuel Lisa built a trading post at the mouth of the Big Horn River. This was the first building in Mont¬ana. That same year John Colter, losing his trail, in the upper Yellowstone country, discovered the future Yellow¬stone Park. The first gold strike was made in 1353 on Gold Creek by James and Granville Stuart. On the later part of the year a richer strike was made on Grasshopper Creek where Bannack sprang up in 1363. That same year gold was also discovered in Alder Gulch where Virginia City grew up and become one of the richest placer mines in the world.
