Show Sports Editor: (801)625-4261 www.standard.net Standard-Examiner Sports Fremont gives team big sendoffto Big Apple By RYAN COMER Standard-Examiner correspondent PLAIN CITY — Roughly 1,600 students packed the gymnasium at Fremont High School Friday morning for a pep rally to celebrate the girls basketball team. Fremont is one of four high school girls basketball teams around the country to be selected to participate in the Dick's Sporting Goods High School National Tournament in New York City. Fremont, the tournament's No. 3 seed, will face No. 2 seed Miami Senior High School from Florida on Friday, April 4 at 10:30 a.m. MDT. The game will be televised on ESPNU. The team will fly out at 7:05 a.m. on April 3. "I want to be real clear, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for our girls," Fremont principal Rod Belnap told the students. "Dick's Sporting Goods made this possible, to be able to send our girls basketball team to New BRIANASCROGGINS/Standard-Examiner Members of the Fremont High School basketball team line up during a pep rally Friday at Fremont High School in Plain City. The Silver Wolves have been invited to play in the Dick's Sporting Goods High School National Tournament in New York City on April 4 against Miami High. Belnap, Dick's Sporting Goods community marketing manager Kelly Cowin and girls basketball coach Lisa Dalebout each took a turn with the microphone speaking to the Fremont From 3B Edgewater High School (Florida) The winner of the Fremont-Miami contest will advance to the championship game at Madison Square Garden on Apr. 5 at 8 a.m. MST. The championship game will be televised on ESPN2. "So honored," Fremont junior BYU commit Shelbee Molen said of the opportunity. "I was like, 'This is not real. There's no way this can be real life.' I'm so blessed to get the chance to go play with my best friends again." Fremont (24-2) enters the tournament on a six- game winning streak after dismantling American Fork 60-27 in the 5-A championship on March 1. Miami (25-1) enters the tournament on a nine-game winning streak and defeated Treasure Coast 49-33 in the Florida 8-A championship on Feb. 22. crowd Friday. Cheerleaders also led the students in cheers. Students were given pom poms and school signs as they entered the gymnasium and Dick's Sporting Goods water bottles as they left. The rally lasted approximately 15 minutes. "I thought our school did a great job coming out and being really loud and excited about all the little things that they got from Dick's Sporting Goods today," Dalebout said. "It's neat. I think our school needs this right now. It's been a neat experience for everybody to be able to take part in it and it was fun today to see everybody come out and support the girls basketball team." Fremont is the first school from Utah to ever be invited to the Dick's Sporting Goods High School National Tournament, now in its sixth season.
