Show Standard-Examiner Friday, May 2, 2014 27 History, fantasy mesh at Utah Renaissance Festival By MORGAN BRIESMASTER Standard-Examiner staff Time will stand still as history and fantasy collide in the ninth annual Utah Renaissance Festival & Fantasy Faire. Every year in May, a team of gypsies, pirates, magicians and royalty present a fanciful display of the Renaissance period featuring whimsical elements of a mythical time. "I think people come to escape the every day, experience something new and learn about the Renaissance," said Mandy Brown, the marketing director for the festival, and longtime vendor. Through the gates of Hawkhurst Village, the annual Jousting Games (a sport of kings) will test the heroism of true knights in a gallant display of horsemanship and chivalry. The competition, held by the Knights of Honor, helps to support the Intermountain Renaissance Arts Foundation. The no-contact jousting games are open to riders 18 and older with at least average skill.
