Wahlen Veterans Home Oct. 11 event includes blood drive By MARK SAAL Standard-Examiner staff OGDEN — Exercise and chili, all for a good cause. The seventh annual George E. Wahlen Veterans Home 5K Run/1-Mile Walk and Chili Cook-Off is planned for Saturday, Oct. 11. Proceeds from the event support military veterans by funding the Wahlen veterans home in Ogden. The fun run begins at 10 a.m. at the veterans home, 1102 N. 1200 West, Registration is $25 by Tuesday; the cost is $30 after that. Entry fee includes a T-shirt (early registrants only), post-race refreshments and prize drawings. Free child care will be provided. A blood drive is also scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at event co-sponsor First United Methodist Church, 1339 W. 400 North, Chili is served to participants of a previous chili cookoff. Marriott-Slaterville. There will also be a bounce house and pony rides. The chili cook-off begins at 11 a.m. at the church; participants can sign up at the church office or by calling 801-393-5662 or 801- 920-1258. Proceeds from this event will fund additional services to the veterans at the home, including trips to museums, restaurants, trout farms and more; purchasing flower and vegetable seeds for gardens maintained by the veterans; and providing veterans with shirts denoting their mili- Courtesy photo tary service affiliation. Organizers of the fundraiser are also seeking donations and gift certificates from the community to be used as awards and prizes.
