Show The Pioneer Post Volume XVI Issue 1 Marriott-Slaterville City Newsletter January 2014 1570 West 400 North - Phone 801-627-1919 - www.marriott-slaterville.org State of the City by Keith Butler, Mayor As we enter our 15 year as a City, I reflect on the many accomplishments we have made as a community. When we started fifteen years ago, it was on a $17,000 loan we received from Weber County. We had it paid off within three months and have remained debt free ever since. We have lived within our means, first renting office space on BDO for the first five years while we saved enough money to build our Senior Center and Municipal Complex. We paid for our city building in cash with our saving and with grants our staff obtained. We moved into our new building in October 2005. In 2007 the City took over Marriott Park and Slaterville Park from the LDS Church. With the help of R.A.M.P grants, our Park Committee, and other contributions, the City completely reconstructed the park boweries, added playgrounds, and planted dozens of new trees. In this same time we also constructed the City Hall Park, Municipal Gardens, and Heritage Park and Storm Water Basin on 700 South. We also completed an extensive addition to the Centennial Trail along the Ogden-Weber River Corridor, and preserved approximately 70+ acres of open space throughout the community in the form of farmland and old growth forest. Several years ago we commenced our biggest project with the reconstruction of 400 North Street. This street serves as a major access for BDO and was in dire need of upgrade. City staff obtained federal road funds in the amount of approximately $5.5 million to complete this project under budget. As new subdivisions commenced in the community in 2006, the City formed the Pioneer Special Service District to provide pressurized secondary water and other services to new subdivisions. We have welcomed our new neighbors who have joined our community. The Pioneer Special Service District provides affordable services to these new subdivisions and is also without debt. Each year our City sponsors four wonderful activities for our residents and families. The first is the Easter Egg Hunt where children come from all around to meet the Easter Bunny and find eggs and treats. Our Fourth of July is always a popular event which celebrates our incorporation as a City and the Independence Day of our Country. Our Halloween Trunk-or- Treat brings out families in costumes to celebrate in a fun safe environment. The last event of each year is Breakfast with Santa where children and families can enjoy a morning event together with the Jolly Old Elf himself. Our community has received a number of Awards over the years. The Utah State House of Representatives designated our City as the model open space community for the state. The Governor awarded us the Quality Growth Award for our land use planning. Recently, the Governor designated us as a Business Friendly Community. We also receive the Tree City USA award each year for our community forestry projects. I can say with pride that all the services and projects provided by the City has been accomplished without a municipal property tax. I am grateful for and thank the many volunteers and others who help create an incredible City that is the envy of the state. Also, I acknowledge the City Council and our great City Staff who work hard and with pride in our community. I recognize the candidates who run for office, our creative Park Committee, and our wonderful Planning Commissioners. May we all look forward to working together in continuing to serve our community in the years to come.
