Show Friday, May 23,2014 Wolves drop squeaker Riverton's lone goal denies Fremont boys state championship By ROY BURTON Standard-Examiner staff SANDY — Three Region 1 soccer teams reached the state 5-A semifinals. After Thursday's championship match at Rio Tinto Stadium, none were left standing. The Riverton Silverwolves topped the Fremont Silver Wolves for the 5-A title by a 1-0 score that was as close as the similarity of their team names would imply. Almost seven minutes in, Riverton senior forward Nick Tanner controlled a pass in the air in front of the goal and pushed it past diving goalkeeper Brayden Nielsen. That was it for the scormg as Riverton's defense and goalkeeper Parker Seegmiller protected the Silverwolves' lead from the Silver Wolves. "It's been a fun ride. Right now it's hard because you lost the game, but as my assistant noted in that little (post- game) meeting, if there's any game to lose, it would be this one," Fremont coach Fred Smith said. "That's not our goal, but we knew we had a good team this year; I don't think a lot of people thought we had a good team — they thought we were average or whatever but we battled hard and we came a long way. It is what it is right now. "Congratulations to (Riverton), they battled, they played hard, but I'm proud of these (Fremont) kids for where they came from four years ago." The Silver Wolves were the last hope for the trio of Region 1 teams in the final four. Viewmont's undefeated run was stopped short by Riverton on Tuesday while Parker Preator's goal and Nielsen's shutout on Tuesday helped Fremont advance to the title game past region rival Layton. "It's something we always knew we could do," Nielsen said of reaching the championship out of a strong region. "We just happened to peak at the right moment and made some key plays See FREMONT I Page 3B DENNIS MONTGOMERY/Special to the Standard-Examiner Riverton's Reed Dudley (white) bicycle-kicks a shot past Fremont defender Robbie Hales during the second half of Thursday's 5-A state championship match played at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy.
