Show Marriott-Slaterville City History July 2014 Marriott-Slaterville Monthly History July 2014 July was a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde month when it came to Utah weather. The first three weeks of the month were exceptionally hot and dry, but then the rains came at the end of the month, which cooled the temperatures down. Above-normal precipitation allowed the state to make a full recovery and then some for the month. We are now entering our fourth year of drought. The average temperature was 5 degrees above average, with the month of July typically being the hottest month of the year in Utah. Overall this year, Salt Lake City and other surrounding areas seem to have received an abundance of moisture, but here in Marriott-Slaterville City we have only received a comparatively small amount of precipitation. The City Council adopted the City's budget for Fiscal Year 2014-15. Mayor Butler has once again presented another balanced budget to the City Council. The new budget includes a modest surplus which will be set aside for future capital projects. Marriott-Slaterville City is one of the few cities in the state that operates without a municipal property tax, and that policy will continue with this new budget. Although garbage costs have increased 1%, this increase will be absorbed by the city's garbage fund and will not be passed on to residents. The City has received two grants for capital projects this summer. The first grant is a Weber County Recreation, Arts, Museums, and Parks (R.A.M.P.) grant that creates a trail head facility for the Centennial Trail along the Ogden River on 1700 South. The second grant is a Community Development Block Grant (C.D.B.G.) that will complete the long awaited parking area and other improvements at Marriott Park. City administration and officials will continue to work to provide efficient and effective services and improvements in the community. The City recognizes the many volunteers who help in numerous capacities and realizes they are central in continuing the creation of this beautiful community we enjoy. Marriott-Slaterville City has two separate but equal branches of government. The executive branch is led by the Mayor and the legislative branch is led by a five member Council. The executive branch handles many of the daily operations of the City and the City Council constitutes the legislative branch. The Mayor and City Council welcome community input and encourage residents to raise any concerns they may have. The annual 4th of July Freedom Celebration was a big success this year, as always. Breakfasts sponsored by the LDS Wards were held in both Marriott and Slaterville, beginning at 8:00 a.m. The parade began at 10:00 a.m. with Mayor Keith Butler leading the way once again in one of Maurice Pitcher's vintage automobiles. Bert Smith and Orvil and Sharon Holley rode with him as his guests. The 15th Annual Golf Tournament was held on Thursday, July 3rd at Mulligan's Golf Course. Prizes were awarded for several different categories, and even after a number of golf balls ended up in the creek everyone had a good time. |
