Show GROUP SEEKS SPECIAL GIFTS Activity Precedes Opening of Red Cross Roll In County Preliminary to the opening of the Weber county Red Cross roll call November 11, active solicitation work by the special gift committee of the local organization has been begun. Mrs. George R. Glen, chairman of the committee, in making the announcement said that in addition to enrollment for the regular one dollar memberships, she and her assistants are seeking to enroll as many as possible under the $5 contributing memberships, $10 sustaining memberships and $25 supporting memberships. She added that some individuals usually contribute even larger amounts. Members of this committee will eavor to enroll all former contributors who enrolled under these cial memberships, as well as new s. Their quota this year has n set higher than in previous roll and it is expected they will tain a substantial portion of the total funds to be collected. Mrs. Glen pointed out that o fifty cents of the amount contributed for each membership goes the national organization, so th the local chapter benefits very m terially from the contributing, supporting and sustaining memberships. The following have been chosen by Mrs. Glen as her assistants: Mrs. Walter Ellingson, Mrs. A. M. Wolfer, Mrs. LeRoy Packer, Mrs. John Scowcroft, Mrs. Thomas Feeney, Mrs. Don Rhivers, Mrs. P. H. Mulcahy. Mrs. Milton White, Mrs. Maude Dee Porter, Mrs. Will Bowman, Mrs. Quill Nebeker and Miss Mildred McKay. They met with Mrs. Glen at her home Wednesday to perfect plans for the enrollment work. Clothing Sought By Red Cross Chapter Persons who have used clothing they do not need are requested to bring it to the Red Cross office, room ten of the city hall, or call telephone 1073 or 2926 for someone to pick it up. The clothing will be distributed to the needy. Service Offered To Red Cross Chapters Mrs. Edith H. McAllister of the American Red Cross national disaster staff, has been assigned to the Pacific area to give special service to chapters confronted with unemployment relief and civilian home service problems, according to work received by L. W. Nims, chairman of Weber county chapter, from A. L. Schafer, manager of the Pacific branch office of the Red Cross in San Francisco. Services of this expert will be available to all chapters in developing better methods of unemployment relief work, says Manager Schafer. HUNDREDS ASK INSTRUCTION IN SWIMMING ART Heavy Response Made To Red Cross Offer At Weber Gymnasium The second annual free “Learn to Swim” weak, sponsored by the Red Cross to reduce loss of life by drowning, will open Monday morning at eight-thirty o’clock in Weber gymnasium with 909 children and adults registered in 24 classes. The first class Monday will be for boys. Throughout the day until nine p.m. classes for boys and girls will alternate at half hour intervals in the big pool. SOME DISAPPOINTED The classes for boys and men will be under direction of Carl Belliston and girls’ and women’s classes will be in charge of Mrs. Lucille Clark. There will be four instructors at each of the classes, some of which number 50 members. The free classes will continue until Saturday night. A number of children were unable to register Saturday at Weber gymnasium, so large was the response. “We are going to have a ‘Learn to Swim’ week in the outdoor pool at South Washington school as soon as the weather becomes warm enough” said Mr. Belliston, “and those who were disappointed Saturday may come to the classes there.” Mr. Belliston said everyone will be expected to bring his own towel. He added that boys who registered for a twelve-thirty class should come at twelve instead, because the twelve-thirty class is for girls. SEVERAL DIVISIONS The 24 classes include 15 non swimmers’ classes, seven for boys and eight for girls; four beginners’ classes, two each for boys and girls; two swimmers’ classes, one each for boys and girls; two adults’ classes, one for men and one for women, and one mixed senior life saving class. BOARD CHOSEN BY RED CROSS New Directors Will Elect Weber Chapter’s Officers Thursday. OGDEN-Directors were elected at the annual meeting of the Weber county chapter, American Red Cross, Tuesday night at the Hotel Bigelow as follows: Mrs. D. R. Wheelwright, A.B. Foulger, Mayor Ora Bundy, Chief of Police A. E. Wilfong, Dr. N. H. Savage, Mrs. E. I. Rich, Carl Gaskill, S. Dilworth Young, F. C. Van Buren, Sterling Price, William P. Stevens, B. A. The directors will meet Thursday evening at the Hotel Bigelow to elect officers. The annual report of Miss Edith Tallman, executive secretary, showed 444 former service men had been given aid in 1930. Carl Gaskill, treasurer, reported $655 raised in a drive last spring. A. E. Wilfong of the flood relief committee reported $2600 raisedin August for Utah flood relief. Mrs. D. R. Wheelwright, president of the chapter, reported the annual roll call, with $2022 receipts. Miss Evelyn Turner of the Junior Red Cross committee said seventy-five packages were sent to Japan by her committee at Christmas. Other CLUBS TO GIVE ASSISTANCE IN EMERGENCIES First Aid To Be Available At City Hall, Airport and Stadium. The Red Cross First Aid club has completed arrangements to provide assistance in emergency cases at the city hall, airport and stadium during the Pioneer days observance, July 21 to 24 inclusive. The Red Cross First Aid club is in charge with the Weber County First Aid club assisting. It is suggested by Dr. R. L. Draper, and B. L. Blood, that those needing first aid should get in touch immediately with anyone wearing a Red Cross arm band, or at one of the first aid stations, at the city hall, airport and the stadium. Mrs. H. W. Gwilliam, secretary of the Weber chapter of the Red Cross, is assisting in final preparations. USED CLOTHING APPEAL MADE Red Cross Receives Calls for Coats, Stockings and Underclothing The Ogden chapter of the American Red Cross today issued an appeal for used clothing to be distributed to the needy. “We have already had numerous calls for clothing, especially for coats, stockings, dresses and childrens’ underclothing,” said Mrs. H C. Gwilliam, executive secretary of the local Red Cross chapter. “Many of the calls come from people who are not on relief but who need clothing to get through the winter.” Mrs. Gwilliam requested persons who have means of transportatior to bring the clothing to Red Cross headquarters in room 10 of the city hall next Monday and Tuesday. People who have clothing to give but have no way of getting it downtown are asked to call Mrs. Thomas Feeny, chairman of the Red Cross motor corps, phone 3703, who will make arrangements for its collection. Since the used clothing will be distributed immediately, Mrs. Gwilliam made a special request that it be clean and in a usable condition. The Red Cross has no facilities for cleaning or mending the clothing she said. Red Cross Oppoints Temporary Secretary At an official executive meeting held by the Weber county unit of the Red Sross organization Thursday it was decided that the regular paid secretary position should be eliminated, owing to lack of funds. Mrs. Henry C. Gwilliam was appointed temporary secretary to serve without pay. Mrs. Gwilliam will devote her services for one-half day each week, Thursday afternoon, to secretarial work at the Red Cross office in the city hall building. Telephone calls may be also made during the week at her home. Red Cross matters may also be taken up by calling L. W. Nims, chairman. |
