Where Surgical Dressings Go Army dressings are shipped to medical depots and from there to hospitals and to ports of embarkation. They go wherever our troops go. The great majority of dressings are for the Army. The requirements for the Navy are very small in comparison and are purchased mostly from manufacturers, although the Red Cross cur¬rently maintains an emergency supply of between three and four million dressings for the Navy. Approximately 90,000,000 dressings have also been made for foreign war relief since the war began in 1939. ORGANIZATION OF KNITTING DEPARTMENT The chairman of knitting is responsible for all knitted garments produced by the chapter. Planning and Supplies Committee—Estimates monthly produc¬tion on basis of quota accepted. Keeps supply room well stocked with Red Cross needle gauges, knitting directions (only the newest revised directions should be used), and sample garments made from these directions. Gives out yarn to workers and receives finished articles. Keeps records with names of persons to whom yarn is issued, quantity of yarn in hands of workers, and number of finished garments returned. Keeps inventory of stock on hand and checks daily output. Workrooms and Equipment Committee—Is responsible for ob¬taining suitable space for the knitting department and equipping it with tables, chairs, shelves, and bins. Instruction and Supervision Committee—Checks all new direc¬tions for knitting and makes samples of all garments before giving out the work to volunteers. All new yarn should be checked for possible adjustments on directions if the yarn is thicker or thinner than previous supplies. It is impossible to write directions that will overcome the handicap of poor yarn. 9
