Show MRS. L. G. DIEHL RESIGNS POST Gives Up Portion of Her Duties in Red Cross Activities Resignation of Mrs. Leonard G. Diehl as secretary of Weber county chapter, American Red Cross, was accepted at a meeting of committee chairman representing the directors of the organization. Mrs. Diehl will remain on active service with the chapter as chairman of volunteer services and chairman of nurses’ aides. Appointment of a new secretary was left to E. G. Bennett, chapter chairman, who was represented at the meeting by L. Wesley Robbins, vice chairman. Will Order Trailer The board authorized the chapter to order a custom-built trailer for the disaster committee to carry emergency supplies and A. T. Barrett, disaster committee chairman, said four or five inserts for trucks, to transform them into four-passenger ambulances, are needed. There is already one on hand. Kent S. Bramwell, first aid instruction director, said 4,380 persons are training under 115 instructors. A canteen is being constructed west of the waiting room at Union depot and will be operated by Mrs. R. B. Porter’s canteen service committee for providing articles and information for soldiers traveling through the city by train, Mrs. Porter said. More Trainees Last Monday, Mrs. Diehl reported, 20 additional trainees for the nurses’ aide went onto the floor of the Dee hospital. One group of 15 has complete the training and they are now contributing time as demanded by their agreement. Sixteen members of the motor corps, headed by Mrs. L. T. Bass, will complete in the near future a training course in auto mechanics being given at Weber college. Because a shortage of tires may reduce the corps’ efficiency, the chapter is considering whether it should purchase a truck to use as ambulance, delivery car or whatever might be needed. LARGE WARDEN CLASS STARTS Air raid precautions training started on an intensive scale Monday evening in Central building auditorium at Weber college for 180 men who will serve as air raid wardens in various districts of the city, including the business area of Ogden. In charge of the course of instruction is R. C. Glasmann, commander of the citizens’ defense corps, who was assisted at the first lesson by Darrel E. Shaw, corps controller; H. W. Brangham, chief warden, and L. Wesley Robbins, training officer. Of the 180 men, approximately 160 indicated that they have yet to take the Red Cross first aid training course of 20 hours before they can qualify as wardens even after completing their training in the current course. Kent S. Bramwell, first aid training director, and Mr. Robbins will arrange classes for these men as soon as possible, Mr. Robins said. The warden training will continue tonight, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and Monday and Tuesday of next week. Ogden Extends Hospitality to Traveling Warriors M-M-M-M-M-M BOY!!! . . . Piping hot coffee and home-made doughnuts, cookies and cake. That's what greets traveling service men under the marquee west of Ogden Uniion depot. The refreshments are distributed without charge by Weber county Red Cross can teen service of which Mrs. R. B. Porter is chairman. The soldiers above, are being served by Mrs. Miles M. Lesher, volunteer worker and wife of the superin¬tendent of Union Paciific din ing car and hotel service. FOOD BRIGHTENS MILITARY TRIPS Men in Uniform Draw Free Refreshments At Rail Station The tantalizing aroma of hot coffee and fresh doughnuts, cookies and cake greets the railroad traveler as he leaves the subway at Ogden Union station. The tempting odors arise from the Weber county Red Cross canteen established inside the depot railing just west of the building. The canteen distributes the refreshments to traveling soldiers, sailors and marines. Almost every guest appears greatly pleased with this bit of home hospitality. Mrs. R. B. Porter, chairman of the canteen service, has 69 volunteer workers on the project. A crew of nine women, one of whom is captain for the day, works three shifts one day a week between the hours of seven-thirty and ten-thirty p.m. They have served as many as 250 service men in one day, and the canteen has just begun to function. Each of the women is required to take a course in nutrition, because the canteen workers are also expected to work during any emergencies which would call the citizens’ defense corps into action. The time and the food are donated by Red Cross volunteers. There is no charge to service men in uniform, and others cannot avail themselves of the service. A large register book is placed on a table outside the canteen booth, and service men are requested to sign their names in it. The book would probably reveal some interesting information, but it might also be construed as information of military value, so to date newsmen have avoided “picking up” any story material from it.
