Description |
The Weber County Chapter of the Red Cross began in December 1915 when a small group of individuals gathered to begin organizing a chapter of the Red Cross. In 1962, the name was changed to the Bonneville chapter, and in 1969, the chapter merged with other chapters in Northern Utah to become the Northern Utah Chapter, with its headquarters located in Ogden, Utah. The scrapbooks range from 1940 to 2003 and highlight some of the important work of the Red Cross. The books include photographs, newspaper clippings, and other materials. |

Show ENVOY PRAISES WEBER CHAPTER PREPAREDNESS Allen E. Kolb Commends Willingness to Admit Shortcomings DEFECTS REMEDIED Local Branch Declared Leader In All Western Country 8/8/41 Changes that have been made in the Weber county Red Cross disaster preparedness setup to compensate for weaknesses revealed June 15 during a “fire drill” rehearsal were explained in detail Friday evening at a dinner and work meeting at Ogden Golf and Country club. Attending were approximately 120 persons, including workers in the disaster committee and special guests. The meeting was called for the dual purpose of advising Allen E. Kolb, field representative of the American Red Cross, and state defense program officials, military depot representatives and governmental officials of progress made in the preparedness program and advising disaster committee members of the revamped organization. Leader In West Mr. Kolb reported the Ogden disaster committee is leading the national setups in the Pacific branch on two fronts. “You were the first to request a three-day training school under experienced disaster workers, an example being followed by other chapters in the area to such an extent that we are hard-pressed to provide the trainers,” he said. “You were also the first to put your organization to test by a rehearsal. Your chapter is to be complimented for its great capacity for self-criticism. It isn’t hard to perform and then pick flaws, but it is seldom that an organization can do that, then put itself together again in better shape than before.” Mr. Kolb said the Red Cross has a reserve staff for use in case of disaster that now numbers more persons than were called into Red Cross service during the World war, and the staff is of more diversified talents. Maw’s Representatives Joseph McKay and R. Whitney Groo of Salt Lake City, newly appointed state defense council chief and coordinator, represented Gov. Herbert B. Maw at the meeting and Mr. McKay spoke briefly on the purpose of the defense council. Lt. Col. George C. Cressey, Hill field, lialson officer between Col. Morris Berman, commandant, and the Red Cross; Liet. Elmer War, Utah general supply depot, representing Lt. Col. William L. Mays and William H. Bauer, Ogden ordnance depot, representing Lt. Col. J. Worthen Proctor, attended as military representatives. Local government officials in attendance were Mayor Fred M. Abbott of Ogden city and Commissioners W. R. McIntire and Arthur P. Brown of Weber county. Notables Participate In Disaster Committee Session DINNER SCENE . . .
