Show AMERICAN RED CROSS PACIFIC AREA CIVIC AUDITORIUM SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA June, 23, 1942 PCS 617 V 47 TO: Chapter Chairmen FROM: Manager SUBJECT: Production for War Relief This letter gives me an opportunity again to express to you and your volunteers the thanks of the hundreds of thousands of refugees in foreign lands and in our insular possessions to whom your gifts have been distributed. You would feel amply repaid for your efforts if you realized even in a small measure what your help has meant to those unfortunate people. We, of the American Red Cross, are proud of you and of your con¬tribution to the oause of humanity. During the past six months hundreds of thousands of garments and surgioal dressings have been shipped to Hawaii, Australia, Russia, and Great Britain. Calls in the future may be greater than in the past, and it is imperative that current requests be met promptly and that we build up as large a reserve as possible to meet future needs, We have large quantities of garments now in our warehouses but a recent survey of these stocks and of the garments in process of production in chapters revealed that the supply of a number of items was low in propor¬tion to probable needs. In addition recent requests from abroad have indicated the advisability of adding new types of garments to our standard list. On the basis of this survey, additional material has been purchased by the Procurement Service of the Treasury Department with government funds and this will be available for distribution during the next few months. Attached is the quota of garments which we should like your chapter to accept for production during the coming year. It is large in comparison with previous quotas but the reasons for this are obvious. First of all it covers a full year's program rather than a quarter or a half year as in the past. Second, it is becoming more and more difficult to secure material and we feel very strongly that our reserve stocks should be increased in order that we will be in a position to fill any emergency requests received from abroad.
