Show Ogden and Weber People Receive High Praise as Victory Scored In Drive Full Success Reached in Red Cross-Chest Campaign TOTAL NOW $77,171 The Red Cross-Community chest united campaign today went over the top with flying colors when subscriptions totaling $77,171 were turned in. This exceeds the set quota by more than $12,000. New subscrip¬tions reported today amounted to $18,471. The largest subscription report¬ed today was $2,500 from the L. D. S. church. Workers were luncheon guests of Willard L. Eccles, chest pres¬ident; E. G. Bennett, general campaign chairman, and Fred A. Kuhlmann, associate chairman. "The appeal of humanity has not gone unheeded. The citizenry of Ogden and Weber county have re-sponded nobly." These were the words of E. G. Bennett, general chairman of the Red Cross-community chest united campaign, read to the volunteer workers of the campaign at their luncheon today at the Hotel Ben Lomond, held in celebration of their victory in gathering subscrip¬tions considerably in excess of the $64,360 goal. Mr. Bennett expressed regret he could not be present be¬cause of having been called away from the state. The message was read by Lynn B. Cornish, vice president of the community chest, who presided at the meeting which was opened with all present singing the national an¬them. Reed Gammell was in charge of music and Mrs. Gammell accom¬panied at the piano. Gratitude Told Following brief remarks, in which he expressed appreciation of the fine accomplishments of the cam-paign workers, Mr. Cornish turned the meeting over to Willard L. Eccles, chest president. In addition to congratulating and expressing thanks to all who participated in the campaign, Mr. Eccles said a debt of gratitude should be ack¬nowledged to the following: "Newspapers, especially The Standard-Examiner, for coopera¬tion and space provided; radio sta¬tion KLO for time on the air giv¬en; Ben Lomond hotel for fine serv¬ice; individuals and firms who pro¬vided complimentary luncheons, and the contributing public for its generous response." Charles N. Barr, for several years manager of the community chest campaigns, and this year manager of the united effort, spoke appreciatively of the co-operation he had received from all. Two Men Commended Due to being confined in a hos¬pital, Fred A. Kuhlmann, associate chairman of the campaign, could not be present, and in his message Mr. Bennett said, "You who have been attending these luncheons this week are familiar with the splen¬did accomplishments of your va¬rious committees, including the mil-itary. I would like to recount those names, but it would be a lengthy list. At this time I do desire to re¬fer to two individuals whose ef¬forts 'have not been made known at these meetings, and, of course, there are many more. One is Fred Kuhlmann, co-chairman of this drive, who performed most of his task before our scheduled report¬ing luncheons. His was organiza¬tional work. Fred has been con¬fined in the hospital since Mon¬day and we have been hoping from day to day that he would be able to appear personally to see the ac¬complishments in which he had a part. The other is Dick Badger, who was chairman of our advance gifts committee, who did a splendid job and whose work was officially completed before the advent of these luncheons." In acknowledging the accomp¬lishments of those who participated in various phases of the campaign, Mr. Bennett said, "You workers, and the contributors you have con¬tacted, have done a wonderful job. You workers have attained victory in this drive — a victory just as important and effective as victories on the battlefield. Without your support the latter is unattainable."
