The Weber County Chapter of the Red Cross began in December 1915 when a small group of individuals gathered to begin organizing a chapter of the Red Cross. In 1962, the name was changed to the Bonneville chapter, and in 1969, the chapter merged with other chapters in Northern Utah to become the Northern Utah Chapter, with its headquarters located in Ogden, Utah. The scrapbooks range from 1940 to 2003 and highlight some of the important work of the Red Cross. The books include photographs, newspaper clippings, and other materials. |

Show Ogden Women Active at Depot Canteen OGDEN — Soldiers visiting Ogden get a cheery welcome, hot coffee, home made cookies, doughnuts and cigarets at a cozily equipped canteen spon¬sored by the Red Cross and operated by prominent Ogden women at one end of the plat¬form of the union station. Sixty-five hundred men have been fed since the opening of the canteen, March 25. An aver¬age of from 150 to 200 are fed each day and on one day 1000 were furnished refreshments. Mrs. Richard B. Porter is chairman of the canteen com¬mittee, with Mrs. H. F. Irwin as cochairman. Sixty volunteer workers take shifts in keeping the canteen open from 7:30 a. m. until 10:30 p. m. each day, a shift of two working five hours. A captain directs activities. Cookies and doughnuts are baked and donated by house¬wives from 35 women's organ¬ization's, each club supplying food on different days. Other clubs furnish emer¬gency supplies, as it is impos¬sible to know just how many soldiers will arrive each day. Trainloads from early morning until late at night are given refreshments. A clever emergency measure is the soliciting of icebox cookies, which can be kept in rolls in the refrigerator and sliced and baked as needed. Ogden canteen committee members of the Red Cross serving refreshments to soldiers at the Union station include, left to right, Mrs. H. F. Irwin, cochairman; Mrs. Richard B. Porter, chairman; Mrs. Wallace H. Ellis, Mrs. Junior, E. Rich and Mrs. Milton H. White, captain. The canteen is in daily operation. |
