Show The chairman of knitting and her assistants should be expert knitters. They should know how to knit and how to adapt direc¬tions. Whoever is acting as supervisor for the day in the knitting department should be well informed on the whole program as well as on all details. Yarn should not be given out indiscriminately. The person in charge should ascertain whether a new worker is a good knitter and able to follow directions. A sample of her knitting should be submitted, using the yarn and the size needles specified for a certain article. Amateur knitters should submit their work from time to time for checking rather than finish a garment which may not be cor¬rectly made. It may be practical to have new workers knit at chapter head¬quarters for a time so that supervision can be given to their work. Knitters who do not turn in acceptable garments should be dis¬couraged from continuing to knit, and urged to take part in some other Red Cross activity. There is not enough yarn available to satisfy all the people who wish to knit, and what there is should be used to the best possible advantage. Inspection Committee—Is responsible for the inspection of finished garments. It is impossible to put too much stress on the importance of accurate and careful measurement and inspection of all garments. If they do not conform to the directions, they should not be accepted. Knitters should be willing to correct their mistakes, and if they are not willing to, or cannot, a group of expert knitters should be available to do this correction work. The person in charge of inspection may use her own discretion in accepting articles with slight and unimportant variations, but it is absolutely essential that a high standard of accuracy be main¬tained. This is increasingly important as the supply of knitting yarn decreases. Packing and Shipping Committee—Is responsible for bundling, labeling, and shipping as indicated on the instruction sheets for the 10 This 93-year-old Red Cross volunteer made her first surgical dressings during the Civil War. She served the Red Cross in World War I and now has volunteered a third time. |
