Show Rev. June, 1940 ORGANIZATION PLAN FOR KNITTING CHAIRMAN OF VOLUNTEER SERVICE PRODUCTION CORPS PLANNING AND SUPPLIES PACKING AND SHIPPING SEWEING COMMITTEE KNITTING COMMITTEE SURGICAL DRESSING COMMITTEE SUB-COMMITTEES WORK ROOM EQUIPMENT INSTRUCITON SUPERVISION INSPECTION The Knitting Committee is responsible for all knitted garments produced by the Chapter. The Committee on Planning and Supplies, and the Committee on Packing and Shipping, as shown on the chart above, apply to the three committees under the Production Corps. If it is deemed advisable, separate committees for this work may be organized to handle the knitting work alone. The other sub-committees suggested in the chart may be combined as seems practical in the Chapter. Planning and Supplies-Responsible for keeping the supply room well stocked with all necessary materials such as Red Cross Needle Gauges, yarn, knitting directions, and sample garments made from these directions. After the Chapter Executive Committee, the Planning and Supplies Committee should determine the quantity of each type of knitted garment to be made and estimate weekly production; keep inventory of stock on. ARC 400-3A Rev. Mar. 1941 Code K-4 MAN’S SLIP-ON SWEATER (Heavy-weight Yarn) Equipment Needed: Yarn-4/8 1 ¼ lbs. of any color not too bright. Needles—Use two needles to fit the Red Cross Needle Gauge for heavy sweaters. Gauges available from Headquarters. Needles slightly smaller may be used to advantage for ribbing. Scale: 5 stitches to the inch, 6 rows to the inch. Make a sample to determine whether or not your scale is the same as that given. If not, adjust the knitting directions to your own knitting by casting on fewer or more stiches depending on whether you knit loosely or tightly. The sample of your knitting is also necessary because the yarn may vary slightly, making adjustments necessary in the number of stitches cast on. General Instructions: Always join new yarn at end of row. Never knot or splice yarn in middle of row. These knitting directions are given as a guide; other simple instructions may be used so long as the garment is the proper size and of correct proportions. These instructions may be varied by using a circular needle (adjusting the directions accordingly) using 4 needles for making the cuffs and other changes desired by the individual knitter so long as the finished garment is accurate. Measurements: Small—Chest 35 inches, Length at center back, 24 inches, Sleeve Length, 21 inches. Medium—Chest 39 inches, Length at center back, 24 1/2 inches, Sleeve Length, 22 inches. Large—Chest 43 inches, Length at center back, 251/2 inches, Sleeve Length, 23 inches. ARC 400-3B Rev.
