Show ‘Learn To Swim’ Course Will Take Place In June Campaigns Said To Cause Great Reduction In Fatalities Reduction in the number of deaths from drowning since 1914 was attributed today by Carl Belliston, Weber county chairman of the American Red Cross life saving program, to the water safety campaigns sponsored by chapters of the Red Cross over the nation. It has been tentatively decided the annual “learn to swim” campaign of the county chapter will be held here the week of June 8, Belliston said. Last year, some 1,000 persons received instruction. Mr. Belliston, who is also assistant coach of Weber college, said persons between ages of 15 and 19 figure highest in the annual toll of deaths from drowning. Between 1930 and 1934, inclusive, 19 persons met their deaths in local rivers and canals, while 31 persons were drowned in Salt Lake county during the same period. One of the objectives of the annual training course is to instruct persons to perform artificial respiration, as well as to rescue persons who have fallen into deep water. Mr. Belliston said many lives would be saved if more persons were instructed in the above duties, making mention of the case of a near tragedy which happened in a Salt Lake City river Tuesday. Had boys who saved the life of a five-year-old child not been trained in life saving, the child would probably have suffered death, he said. During the 1930-1934 period, Mr. Belliston said, Beaver, Daggett, Kane, Rich, San Juan, Seveir, Washington and Wayne had not reported a single death from drowning. For Training Carl Belliston is chairman of the local Red Cross lifesaving program.
