Show WAR 12/7/41 THURSDAY EVENING, DECEMBER 18, 1941 LARGE CREW TO ACT AS GUARDS IN BLACKOUTS Standard Warning Unit Desired; Assignments Are Awaited Weber county will be policed during blackouts by a huge crew of trained men, it was announced today by R. C. Glasmann, chair¬man of Weber county civilian de¬fense council air raid precautions unit. The Ogden Alerts, organized by ex-service men, will divide the county according to the L. D. S. church divisions, having sections corresponding to the five stakes, and divisions under them corre¬sponding to the wards. Under the ward divisions, each block will be allotted to the necessary number of wardens. Warning Methods Meanwhile, Sheriff J. R. Watson, head of the county council's protec¬tion division, was attempting to get Coordinator J. A. Howell and Council Chairman J. W. Arlington together to work out a standard system of warning. Until the standard system is de¬vised, the council has announced that railroad whistles and possibly a few sirens will be used, blasting continuously for a five-minte period. Moving sirens, Sheriff Wat¬son said, are not to be considered as air raid warnings. If sires are called into service, they will be stationed at corners and blast while standing still. For Complete Picture Official confirmation of council appointments is expected to be mailed in a day or two to those named, and then the entire group will assemble for a long session at which each section's duties will be outlined for the benefit of all so that a complete picture of the efforts of the council may be had by all. Meantime, a new problem has arisen for registrars, working in the registration office at 2514 Washington. Many women have indicated they have training needed in hospital work, and have agreed to put that training to use pro¬vided they can find someone to take care of their children while they are serving. Registrars have been asked to list any women making this report and to list women and girls who can take care of children, either at their own homes or at the homes of the children. In this way, needed help can be released when the call arises. County Included "Weber county is included in this registration as much as Ogden city," said Vernon J. Eldredge, of¬fice manager, today. "We should have more registrations from the county, because the work in the county will be harder, where the population is scattered, than it will be in the city, where workers are available on every hand if necessary." Mr. Eldredge said he hoped the majority of the volunteer workers in the county can be registered by next Monday evening so that classification and assignment can be made. "People who register to serve are asked not to become impatient if they are not called upon at once. Perhaps the particmular job they prefer has been filled before their card is found, and perhaps the registrars have not yet decided which division they will fit into best. When you are reeded you will be called if you are regis¬tered," Mr. Eldredge said. Authority Held Mr. Arrington, council chairman, said the Weber county civilian de¬fense council and the American Red Cross are the only authorized agencies to take charge of defense work. Everyone should be regis¬tered with the defense council, and everyone already assigned to Red Cross work should be recorded in both offices. Persons registered with other or¬ganizations are not officially recog¬nized in any capacity. In case of blackouts and other emergencies that might arise without an actual bombing in this area, council members are in charge. In case of a bombing, the Red Cross disaster committee, itself incorporated into the defense council by the expedi¬ent of duplicate assignment of tasks, will be in charge. They Build Foundation of Air Raid Warden System ALERT . . . These men, veterans of American armed forces during the World war, form the nucleus of the air raid warden system being organized in Weber county. Standing at left is James Kallas, who called the meeting to order and turned it over to R. C. Glasmann of the state civilian defense council, who is chairman of the air raid precautions group in Weber county and chief of staff of the wardens' organization. |
