The service strives to coordinate the efforts of organizations and individuals who wish to serve the armed forces on active duty. RED CROSS AIMS ARE EXPLAINED Primary Objective Is to Coordinate Efforts, Official Says Aims and purposes of the Red Cross camp and hospital service were explained to Weber county officials and members of the American Red Cross by Mrs. John F. Manning, of the national committee of the camp and hospital service of the American Red Cross Pacific area, at a well attended meeting in the city-county building. The service strives to coordinate, Mrs. Manning told the group, the efforts of organizations and individuals who wish to serve the armed forces on active duty. Various means of providing this service, such as furnishing usn rooms, recreation rooms and supplying recreation chests to hospitals and outposts were described by Mrs. Manning. Needs of Bushnell general hospital at Brigham City, were listed by Miss A. Riggs, a Red Cross field director at this hospital, following Mrs. Manning’s general discussion. Following the brief talks a question and answer session was conducted by Mrs. Manning. Mrs. Manning, upon her arrival here was met by Edward Eissen, field director, for this area; Mrs. Leah Greenwell, executive secretary, and Mrs. George L. Abbott, chairman of camp and hospital for Weber county, and was immediately taken to Hill field on a tour of inspection. Spent for furniture for three recreation rooms; at the Utah quartermaster depot, $308.75 was spent on furnishing for two recreation rooms; and $130.95 was used for supplementary furnishings at the colored USO center on Wall avenue. The following organizations have furnished recreation rooms at Hill field, under direction of the camp and hospital service: Martha Junior society, American Legion auxiliary, Kiwanis club and B’nai B’rith organization. Many Contribute Many individuals have contributed radios, phonographs and furniture and substantial gifts of money to be used in furnishing recreation rooms. Magazines, games and cards have been collected by the Junior Red Cross, under direction of Miss Sara McCracken and members of her committee. They are gathered weekly by the Ogden motor corps and delivered to the depots. There are many rooms still to be furnished and Christmas parties are being planned for the quartermaster depot, Ogden air depot, and the colored soldier camp at Hooper, as well as Bushnell general hospital at Brigham City by the Weber county camp and hospital committee. The committee is comprised of Mrs. George L. Abbott, chairman; Mrs. Brady Dirker, vice chairman; Mrs. Lawrence T. Dee, Miss Sarah McCracken and Mrs. Milton Boyle Hill Field Meeting After meeting with Col. Morris Berman, commanding officer of Hill field, who expressed his appreciation of the effort of the camp and hospital unit, Mrs. Manning returned to Ogden where she was introduced by Wesley Robbins, vice chairman, Weber Red Cross, and Mrs. Abbott, to a representative group of Ogden clubwomen and members of the Red Cross form Box Elder, Cache, Davis and Morgan counties. Mrs. Manning, who is on a five-month tour of inspection of camp and hospital units of all states west of the Rockies, gave a comprehensive talk on the work done in the Pacific coast area and expressed her appreciation and interest in the work being done in this area. Since the Ogden unit was organized, it has completed the following projects: Projects Listed Supplied furnishing for a recreation room at Hopper, games, cards and magazines to guard troops stationed in this area, and members of the Welfare league furnished a recreation room at Hill field. Iu August, the Ogden Advertising club, with the assistance of some members of the Horse Show association, sponsored a horse show and profits amounting to $1213,73 were turned over to the camp and hospital service. The funds have been expended in the following manner: At Ogden air depot, $484.90 was Red Cross Retains Staff and Recounts Progress 12/15 Officers of Weber county chapter of American Red Cross were retained for another year at a meeting of the board of directors Tuesday evening in the Utah Power auditorium. The officers are: E.G. Bennett, chairman; L.W. Robbins, vice chairman; G. M. Jones, treasurer; Dr. Frank Douglas, secretary; Mrs. Leah p. Greenwell, executive secretary. New directors elected to serve for three years are Kent S. Bramwell, A. Parley Bates, W. J. Critchlow, Jr., Frank D. Sawyer, Harold S. Campbell, June Stimson, Lieut. David K Usher, Col. W. I> Moore, the Rev. George H. Argyle, Dr. E. P. Mills, J.H. Riley, Lucille Chambers, MRs. Val Browning, Mrs. Elva A. Kunz and Mrs. H.A. Benning. \Holdover directors to serve for two years are the Rev. John Edward Carver, George F. Simmons, H. Aldous Dixon, Merrill J. Bunnell, W. I. Lowe, R. E. Edens, R. G. Brown, Ross C. Glassmann, Laawrence H. Evans, W. G. hall, Samuel G. Dye, the Rev. W. J. Giroux, C. B. Doty, Walter E. Mann, Richard C. Badger and H. L. Roylance. Directors now filling their last year of the three-year term are William D. Wood, Jr., Samuel C. Powell, Fred A. Kuhlmann, E.R. Buckner, Don E. Leader, Leonard G. Diehl, A. Levin, LeRoy B. Young, Lynn B. Cornish and George W. Craddock. Bennett’s Report A report of the highlights of accomplishments by Weber chapter and present state of finances was given by Chairman Bennett. “American National Red Cross has reached an all-time peak in performance,” stated Mr. Bennett. “The duties of Red Cross workers fall into two general categories. One is the traditional service in response to the charter obligation given the Red Cross by congress to ‘act in matters of voluntary relief’ and ‘as a medium of communication between the people of the United States of America and their army and navy.’ The other is the expended program of recreation set up to help meet a definite need in morale.” “Workers in Weber chapter are more than doing their share both on the home front and in materials furnished and service rendered the boys overseas and I wish to express my appreciation.” Great Increase L. Wesley Robbins, recently back form a meeting at Red Cross headquarters in San Francisco, reported a tremendous increase in Red Cross activity overseas for men and women in military service. “The first objective of national Red Cross is now service overseas and all funds, supplies and personal will be concentrated hereafter on that effort until the war is won,” he said. “Home front service will be minimized as far as possible.” Mr. Robbins also reported on the favorable reaction service men are bringing Ogden and Weber county through the Red Cross |
