The kit bag service has proved to be very popular, as attested by hundreds of letters expressing gratitude and appreciation from men who have received them. Army and Navy Hospitals Garments and comfort articles for use in Army and Navy hos¬pitals are made with materials purchased locally by chapters. Many chapters show great ingenuity in using scraps of materials for bedroom slippers, patchwork quilts, etc. The latter especially are very popular with the patients. Civilian Hospitals In larger chapters many garments and articles are made for civilian hospitals, the materials for which are provided by the hospitals. Emergency Closets—Disaster Relief—Home Service It is very important for every chapter to have on hand a reserve stock of garments for use in emergencies and to meet the needs of Home Service. These garments may be made of new materials or renovated used clothing. Sewing Units for Servicemen Many chapters located in the vicinity of Army camps have formed sewing units to mend for servicemen. In some cases these are mobile units which make periodic visits to camps and do the sewing there. In other cases they are established at chapter head¬quarters and the men bring in their uniforms for mending or altera¬tion. This is an exceedingly popular and useful service. Foreign War Relief The largest sewing program has been the making of garments for war refugees in foreign countries. This was begun in 1939 soon after the outbreak of war in Europe. Large quantities of materials for these garments were purchased with government funds 16 A sewing unit for servicemen
