Show GREET CHEST SOLICITORS WITH A RADIANT SMILE! Big Drive For $35,000 Fund Gets Under Way This Morning; 526 Volunteers…. To Raise Quota Following the “kick-off” at the eight o’clock Early Bird breakfast this morning, in the ballroom of the Hotel Ben Lomond, workers in Ogden’s first annual Community Chest appeal will begin the intensive canvass for funds with which to finance the seven welfare agencies of the chest during the coming twelve months. The breakfast meeting will be presided over by Geo. S. Eccles, general campaign chairman, who will welcome the workers and state briefly the needs of the humanitarian agencies of the chest. Harold E. Hemingway, president of the chest, will speak briefly, stressing the imperative need for a successful effort and emphasizing the fact that the community at large recognizes the need of thousands of unfortunate citizens, greater in number this year than ever before; that of the increased number a large proportion are not in their present straitened circumstances because of any fault of their own, but because of the nationwide depression. Mrs. G. L. Becker and Ora Bundy, chairmen of the women’s and men’s divisions, will give instructions to their workers before taking the field. The present quota of $35,000 sought in the campaign is the amount required to finance the constructive work of the seven participating agencies. Geo. S. Eccles, general campaign chairman, issued a statement late last night to the public in which he said that those who are to work this coming week are salesmen who work without pay and he asks the public to meet them with a smile. He said: “The men and women who call to solicit your annual community chest contribution do so without selfish interest of any kind. That the combined time of the 526 men and women workers in this First Community Chest campaign, to their employers and to themselves, runs into a lot of money. That each of these workers not only gives freey of his or her time and energy, out also makes a personal contribution from their own pockets. “This year the work of the solicitors is greater than on any of the previous campaigns Ogden has had for welfare work. The results of the depression have greatly increased the work of the agencies participating in the chest. “Certainly there can be no question of the value of a community chest plan of financing the operation of welfare agencies, as it is the best plan evolved to date. To adequately provide for the various stypes of welfare agencies by carefully pre-determined budgets is the most business-like method we can employ. “The Chest plan has stood the test of time in hundreds of other cities. One campaign for funds instead of seven-on budget committee-one executive board-saving time, energy and money for all concerned. So this is merely an appeal to help lighten the task of these salesmen who work without pay. Greet them with a smile. Ask all the questions you like, but don’t keep them waiting or ask them to come back for your subscription. “And if by any chance they miss you, bring your subscription to campaign headquarters, Hotel Ben Lomond or telephone 151 and ask us to send for it. It isn’t how much you give, but how you give, that counts in a community undertaking of this kind.” Following is a list of cities in the class of Ogden, and the Community Chest funds which they have set up or subscribed for 1934: City- Pop.
