British $25,340,353 Including 22 million surgical dressings, 3,808,318 chapter-produced garments, 153 ambulances, medical supplies and equipment, 274 nursery centers, and establishment of American Red Cross-Harvard Hospital. British Middle East $2,183,014 Principally food and medicines originally consigned to Greece, di¬verted after occupation. Present distribution through British Red Cross in Eritrea, Abyssinia, Egypt, and Syria. France $4,737,615 Primarily in unoccupied France, shipped in Red Cross "mercy ships" including 7,503 tons milk, 225 tons clothing, all for children. 13,500 tons flour, 42 tons medical supplies, for general distribution. China $2,936,124 Not including $1,000,000 relief from 1937-1940. Includes 550 tons medical supplies, 3,300,000 yds. cloth for Free China and 11,545 tons wheat and rice for Shanghai and Hong Kong areas. Finland $2,382,131 Begun December 1939, continued until military developments in June 1941 prevented further shipments. Principally food, clothing, and medical supplies distributed through Finnish Red Cross and other agencies. Spain $1,821,568 From February to September 1941, to meet famine conditions. 19,190 tons food, 65 tons medical supplies, purchased by U.S. Government agencies, distributed by Spanish Red Cross, Auxilio Social, and 474 local agencies. Poland $995, 226 Begun September 1939, and continued in Government General until May 1940. Principally medical supplies and clothing. Aid still being given to Polish refugees in other countries. Greece $391,113 Supplies en route to Greece had to be diverted due to occupation. Represents principally cash grants to Greece prior to occupation, used mostly for medical supplies, equipment, and clothing. Yugoslavia $75,000 Used principally for feeding 85,000 homeless in Belgrade during and for short time following occupation. Also includes assistance to Yugoslav refugees in Greece. Norway $45,740 Low Countries $85,110 Medical aid in Norway while possible through British Red Cross. Also assistance to Norwegian refugees in Sweden. Aid to Belgian, Dutch, and Luxembourg refugees in other countries. Prisoners of War $432,464 120,000 food packages as well as clothing, shoes, and soap. Distri¬bution to British and Allied prisoners through International Red Cross Committee. Also transmission funds, supplies to war pris¬oners, Canada. Inquiry and Information Over 80,000 inquiries regarding location and welfare of persons in war-affected countries. Approximately 48,000 reports, principally obtained from International Red Cross Committee, sent to inquirers. Chapter Production 1,200,000 volunteers engaged in production in 9,691 chapters and branches. Already shipped, 25,200,000 surgical dressings and 4,900,- 000 other chapter-produced articles, principally clothing. |
